The Highfield School in Wakefield, West Yorkshire sent an email to a Castleford taxi company to set up a regular service for one of its students a few days ago. An employee at the School emailed the local taxi company in which he said: “Unfortunately our student will not tolerate anybody who is not white British, therefore to safeguard your drivers please could you always send a white British driver.”
The employee at the taxi customer support who isn’t named was shocked at the insensitive and profoundly racist email from the school. The spokesman from the taxi company said: “I was in shock after reading the email because it was from a school where we teach the next generation to condemn and stand against the racism.”
Wajid Ali, co-chairman of Wakefield District Private Hire and Hackney Association, said we had a meeting with our 500 association members and everybody is upset upon this issue, none of us believes that a public body can send this type of request to a company.
A taxi driver from Wakefield said: “I have been driving taxi from last 14 years and I consider myself as a professional taxi driver, and certainly I never judge anyone on their ethnicity.”
An executive headteacher at Highfield School Peter Marshall has apologised to the taxi firm. He said: “We know that the email sent by the school was wholly inappropriate and nonprofessional and we apologise for any offence caused by it.”
